Schedule 5 to the Securities and Futures Ordinance (SFO) stipulates 13 types of regulated activity:

Type 5 Advising on futures contracts

Type 6 Advising on corporate finance

Type 7 Providing automated trading services

Type 10 Providing credit rating services

Type 11 Dealing in OTC derivative products or advising on OTC derivative products

Type 12 Providing client clearing services for OTC derivative transactions

Type 13 Providing depositary services for relevant CISs
Depending on your business needs, you can acquire or apply to become a Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) licensed company. Among them, license for Type 1, 4 and 9 have more demand for acquisition / transfer in the market.
SFC License for Type 1, 4, 9
License for Type 1 Regulated Activities (Dealing in Securities)
Securities Firm:
- It is a securities firm that can provide customers with services for buying and selling securities products.
Introducing Agent:
- It is an introducing agent or a trader, it can only recommend customers to purchase securities products from securities firms.
License for Type 4 Regulated Activity (Advising on Securities)
License for Type 9 Regulated Activity (Asset Management)
Type 9 - Unconditional License (No Condition), Professional Investors (PI) only :
- Client assets can be held, and investors must be professional investors (PI).
- Client’s assets can be transferred directly to the company’s account,
- The entire asset can be invested and managed as a unified account.
Type 9 - Unconditional Licenses (No Condition) :
- Client assets can be held and the investor does not need to be a professional investor (PI).
- The minimum investment amount for customer subscription is very low, and you can manage index funds such as ETFs, interactive funds, etc.
- Client’s assets can be transferred directly to the company’s account,
- The entire asset can be invested and managed as a unified account.
Type 9 - Conditional License, Professional Investors (PI) only
- Client assets cannot be held and investors must be professional investors (PI).
- Separate accounts must be set up for each customer.
- Can manage collective investment schemes "CIS" (private equity funds) that make offers only to professional investors.
The requirements, setup costs, and maintenance costs of Unconditional License (No Condition) are generally higher. You can apply for / acquire SFC licensed companies depending on your business needs.
